Grime – Part 1

Posted: September 27, 2011 in Music.

In this Blog, i will be showing how UK Grime as a type of music has developed and grown over the years and some of the artists that have really effected the scene and industry.

Grime Is also linked with other genre’s such as Hip-hop, Garage, American Hip-hop, Drum and Bass and Dubstep.

Originally Grime comes from London and was played on ‘pirate radio’ It is quite a new Genre of music as a whole with artists such as Wiley, Skepta, Kano being the main contributors (in my eyes) to the scene. Grime was mainly selected to be its own genre because of its ‘darker’ beats and lyrics, compared to the light beats and lyrics in garage and drum and bass songs.

Grime is considered to be the main type of ‘underground’ music with only certain artists making it to that mainstream level, reasons for this are that a lot of artists like to keep their music to ‘the streets’ because of the things they are rapping about where as other artists will grow up on the underground scene and then develop into the mainstream. An artist that has recently done this and is now known internationally is Chipmunk, other artists who have done this our Dizzie Rascal, Skepta, Wiley and Giggs who are upon some of my favourite artists in the scene.

I have a passion for this genre because it’s always coming up with fresh beats and new talent coming through the industry, i think it’s also good because it gives a lot of fresh artists a chance whereas other music genre’s only play the big bands or artists which doesn’t allow new talent to come through as quickly as Grime.

Grime has always had a huge amount of criticism, after doing some research about this on the internet (mainly becauseĀ IĀ don’t have enough knowledge myself just yet!) i found a short article on an artist i have a huge interest for, Giggs, who had shows called off and songs banned because of the explicit content within them, to see one of the articles i have got a link.

The article shows that even though he is having shows cancelled because of his past and having constant fighting in order to get through and progress in his career that he is still going strong, this is why i have such a passion for grime, because of the underlying message held within.
